2 days agoAfrican National Congress (ANC) Secretary‑General Fikile Mbalula has confirmed that the party will urgently confront a political twist ahead of South Africa’s upcoming local government elections. The South African Communist Party (SACP), historically a steadfast ally that has campaigned alongside the ANC, is now considering contesting the elections independently — a move that could reshape the political landscape and alliance dynamics.
Mbalula revealed that the ANC’s top decision‑making bodies, including the National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC), will convene in special sessions this week to examine the potential implications of the SACP’s decision and define the party’s response.
Speaking to the media in Mamelodi, Pretoria — shortly after honoring liberation hero Solomon Mahlangu — Mbalula emphasized that the ANC is determined to address internal challenges cooperatively, while ensuring the “centre holds” amid growing debates across party structures.
In addition, Mbalula acknowledged concerns from the ANC Veterans’ League over the appointment of EFF Gauteng chairperson Nkululeko Dunga as the province’s Finance MEC, a topic also set to be discussed in upcoming meetings.
