South Africa’s political future may be heading toward a more inclusive but complex coalition era, as ANC Deputy President Paul Mashatile signals openness to working with opposition parties like the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Speaking after a Good Friday service in Johannesburg, Mashatile emphasized that the African National Congress (ANC) remains committed to collaboration within the Government of National Unity (GNU).

His remarks come at a time of growing political realignment, especially following the appointment of an EFF member as Gauteng MEC of Finance. This move has sparked speculation that similar cooperation could emerge at the national level. Mashatile made it clear that the ANC is willing to engage with any party dedicated to “saving South Africa,” stressing that inclusivity—not political rivalry—should guide governance decisions.

Interestingly, coalition politics are already taking shape in provinces like KwaZulu-Natal, where multiple parties have formed alliances. The Gauteng example, where the ANC and EFF have found common ground, may serve as a blueprint for broader national cooperation.

Mashatile’s message highlights a strategic shift: the ANC appears ready to prioritize stability and service delivery over ideological differences. As South Africa navigates economic and social challenges, this openness to partnerships could redefine governance, potentially ushering in a new era of shared political responsibility and collective problem-solving.
