2 hrs agoThe African National Congress (ANC) has officially launched its highly anticipated process to select mayoral candidates for the 2026 Local Government Elections, signaling a strategic shift toward broader inclusivity and stronger leadership. During a live media briefing, the party emphasized that the process will not be limited to internal members alone but will extend to society at large, inviting public participation in nominating capable individuals.
Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula highlighted that the ANC aims to “headhunt the best brains” across various sectors, including experienced public servants, professionals, and community leaders. This move reflects a deliberate attempt to strengthen governance by prioritizing competence, leadership track records, and accountability over traditional political pathways.
Interestingly, the process could see some current regional leaders excluded if they fail to meet the required standards, reinforcing the party’s focus on performance and credibility. The selection process is expected to be completed by the end of June, allowing sufficient time for preparation ahead of the elections.
Additionally, the ANC addressed internal concerns around dual membership within its alliance structures, reaffirming that members who contest against the party risk losing their membership. This underscores the importance of unity and discipline within the organization.
Overall, the new approach marks a significant evolution in how the ANC seeks to rebuild trust and deliver effective local governance.
