4 days agoAfrican National Congress (ANC) Secretary‑General Fikile Mbalula has officially announced the start of interviews for mayoral candidates across South Africa’s municipal landscape, signalling a key milestone in the party’s preparations ahead of the 2026 local government elections. Speaking in Mamelodi, Pretoria, Mbalula confirmed that the candidate selection process has already begun this week and that the party plans to publicly unveil its chosen contenders by May.
Mbalula explained that the process will be inclusive and far‑reaching, involving mass participation and engagement with civil society groups as part of a broader framework yet to be detailed at an upcoming press conference.
This move aims to ensure that mayors are not merely party favorites but leaders rooted in community needs and capable of addressing critical service delivery challenges.
The announcement comes amid mounting pressure on the ANC to regain public trust following dissatisfaction with local governance in several municipalities — a sentiment underscored by Mbalula at recent events where he acknowledged a decline in confidence toward the party.
By opening up the interview process and inviting broader participation, the ANC hopes to demonstrate transparency and renewed commitment to effective municipal leadership ahead of the elections.
