3 hrs agoSouth African Communist Party (SACP) Deputy National Chairperson, Thulas Nxesi, has made it clear that the party’s recent political moves are not intended to weaken its historic alliance with the African National Congress (ANC), but rather to reshape and strengthen it. Speaking during the commemoration of struggle icon Chris Hani, Nxesi emphasized that the SACP’s decision to contest elections independently should not be misunderstood as a breakaway, but as a strategic step toward renewing the alliance’s purpose.
He argued that the alliance must evolve to better reflect the needs of the working class, calling for “reconfiguration” to restore clarity and democratic engagement within its structures. According to Nxesi, growing tensions between alliance partners should be handled with discipline and political maturity, rather than fueling division.
The speech comes at a time of increasing political strain, as the SACP charts a more independent path ahead of upcoming elections. Despite this, Nxesi insists that unity remains crucial, warning that external critics may exploit internal disagreements.
Meanwhile, reflections on Hani’s legacy highlighted ongoing socio-economic challenges, reinforcing the urgency for meaningful transformation and service delivery for ordinary citizens.
