1 hr agoIn a bold and unmistakable message ahead of South Africa’s crucial local government elections, President Cyril Ramaphosa has drawn a clear line in the sand: every member of the African National Congress (ANC) must campaign and vote for the party—without exception.
Speaking at the ANC’s Limpopo Elective Conference, Ramaphosa directly addressed growing tensions within the historic alliance between the ANC and the South African Communist Party (SACP). The friction stems from the SACP’s decision to contest elections independently—an unprecedented move that threatens to fracture a long-standing political partnership.
Ramaphosa acknowledged the complexity of dual membership, as many individuals belong to both organizations. However, his stance was firm: loyalty to the ANC must come first. He emphasized that unity is not optional but essential, warning that internal divisions and factional battles weaken the party’s ability to serve the nation effectively.
Beyond party politics, Ramaphosa linked unity to broader national challenges. He pointed to global conflicts driving up food and energy prices, adding pressure to an already strained economy. In such a climate, he argued, a divided ANC cannot deliver meaningful solutions.
