Agriculture – Why We Are a Net Food Importer

Nigeria has arable land and a massive workforce. Why are we importing tomatoes and rice?

    1. The "Rice" Story: Look at the anchor borrowers' program. While it boosted local rice production, the ban on importation via land borders created a monopoly for local millers, leading to price gouging.

    2. Insecurity: Farmers in the North (the food basket) can’t go to their farms due to banditry and kidnappings. Food scarcity starts with insecurity.

    3. Logistics: Post-harvest losses are estimated at 30-50%. Bad roads from rural areas to urban markets mean food rots before it arrives. We don’t have a food production problem as much as a food movement problem.

    4. Climate Change: Flooding and unpredictable weather patterns are wiping out harvests.

We need to stop seeing agriculture as a "development project" and start seeing it as a business. We need to mechanize, provide cold storage infrastructure, and secure the farmlands. Until then, we will remain vulnerable to food inflation.
