1 hr agoFor years, renewing a South African passport while living in Canada felt like an exhausting journey rather than a simple administrative task. Many expats had to travel thousands of kilometres to cities like Toronto or Ottawa, spending heavily on flights, accommodation, and time off work just to complete the process.
Now, that reality is changing—thanks to the persistent voices of South Africans abroad. The Department of Home Affairs has responded by expanding passport renewal services across Canada, introducing six new service centres in cities including Vancouver, Edmonton, Montreal, and Halifax.
This expansion is more than just convenience; it’s about fairness and accessibility. Previously, many South Africans living in smaller provinces felt excluded due to limited service locations. With Canada’s vast geography, travelling over 3,000 kilometres for paperwork was not uncommon.
The new centres significantly reduce travel costs and waiting times, making the process more practical for thousands of expats. It also highlights the power of collective action—showing that consistent feedback can lead to real change.
While challenges like demand and processing times remain, this move marks a major step forward. For South Africans in Canada, passport renewals are no longer a burden defined by distance, but a service finally adapting to their needs.
