Gauteng’s education system is facing mounting pressure as rapid population growth continues to outpace available resources, exposing deep structural challenges. According to provincial authorities, learner enrolment has surged dramatically over the years, driven largely by urbanisation and migration, placing immense strain on schools and infrastructure.

One of the most pressing issues is overcrowding. Hundreds of schools are now operating beyond capacity, with some classrooms accommodating between 60 and 70 learners per teacher. This environment makes effective teaching and learning increasingly difficult, ultimately affecting academic outcomes.

The shortage of classrooms further compounds the crisis. Thousands are needed across both primary and secondary schools, forcing many institutions to rely on temporary structures that are often unsafe and poorly maintained. In addition, the province faces a significant shortage of new schools, highlighting a widening gap between demand and supply.

Infrastructure delays and bureaucratic hurdles also play a role. Approval processes for new schools have reportedly been slowed by municipal demands and administrative inefficiencies, delaying much-needed expansion.

Despite progress in expanding access to education since 1994, these persistent challenges reveal a system struggling to keep up. Without urgent intervention, the quality of education risks being further compromised for future generations.
