3 hrs agoIn a significant political shift, Geordin Hill-Lewis has been elected as the new leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), marking a fresh era for one of South Africa’s major opposition parties. The announcement came after a competitive leadership race concluded at the party’s Federal Congress held in Midrand, Johannesburg, where more than two thousand delegates gathered to decide the party’s future direction.
Hill-Lewis, who currently serves as the Mayor of Cape Town, emerged victorious over his rival, Sibusiso Dyonase, the caucus leader of Sedibeng Municipality. The contest was described as respectful and collegial, reflecting unity within the party despite differing visions.
The announcement was officially made by Bridget Masango, who praised both candidates for their commitment and integrity throughout the campaign. Hill-Lewis’s victory signals a potential strategic shift as the DA seeks to strengthen its position in South Africa’s evolving political landscape.
As the new federal leader, Hill-Lewis is expected to build on the party’s existing foundation while introducing new ideas to expand its national appeal. His leadership comes at a crucial time, with growing political competition and increasing public demand for effective governance.
